High-Quality Early Childhood Education affects the lives of children — especially those from vulnerable populations — by building foundational skills and setting them up for success in later grades

Scroll down to begin.

To date, efforts to improve the quality of early education have focused mostly on classroom practices, and have been the responsibility of teachers.

Yet, we know that the climate and conditionssurrounding teaching and family engagement are critical to supporting real and lasting change for children.

So, instead of focusing solely on classroom practices, schools and centers must consider these six essentials:

  • Effective Instructional Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction
  • Parent Voice

A well-organized school or center is one that is strong on three or more of the essentials, with a positive climate that is much more likely to have higher-quality teaching and better children’s attendance outcomes.

The strength in these essentials comes in their interdependence

Research shows that the essentials are correlated – especially Effective Instructional Leaders and Collaborative Teachers – suggesting that they work together to create the overall culture and climate within an early childhood education site.

The Essential 0-5 Survey data are straightforwardand actionable

Leaders, teachers, and staff will be able to identify areas for improvement and make changes to strengthen your organization and improve outcomes for children and families.

A group’s performance is an aggregate of the individual schools’ performance on each of the 0-5 Essentials. Group reports show the distribution of performance across schools, trends in specific Essentials and Measures, and identifies strengths and areas for improvement.
